Fishing Bait Tips – 3 Tips to Make You a Better Fisherman
For many anglers throwing lures or waving feathers in the air, simply isn’t the best way to catch fish. Sure, lures and flies are effective fish catching tools; it’s just that bait seems to be more effective in many situations. I have personally been fishing with bait for more than 25 years and in this article I will outline 3 fishing bait tips that will make anyone a more effective angler anytime that bait, especially live bait, is employed.
Obviously the term ‘fishing bait’ is a broad term that can include many different types of bait, from live worms to paste or nuggets that are sold in jars. For the purposes of this article I’m going to focus on live bait, rather than any other variety. These fishing bait tips should be employed when fishing with any form of live bait.
These tips aren’t being listed in any particular order, so use them as you see fit.
1. Your Live Bait Must Be Alive – Anytime that live bait is used for fishing it is extremely important that the bait be as lively as possible. Dead or dying bait won’t be nearly as effective as “lively” bait. It many instances this means keeping your bait cool or wet and in the case of live fish such as minnows this means keeping the water they are kept in well oxygenated. The bottom line is that when using any form of live bait you want your bait to be as lively as possible.
2. Your Baits Aroma Must Not Include Your Aroma – You’ve undoubtedly been exposed to many fishing bait tips, and this simple tip is easily one of the most important. Every human being emits scents that are easily detected by fish. Many species of fish have very sensitive senses of smell and will avoid baits that don’t ’smell’ right. As a live bait angler, you don’t want these scents to be on your bait. This means that you want to free you hands of these scents by washing them with odor neutralizing soap or by rubbing them in grass or dirt before baiting up. The bottom line is that you want the focus of your offering to be the bait and this includes the scents on the bait.
3. Your Bait Needs To Be The Focus Of The Offering – When using any type of live bait, one of the key fishing bait tips is for the bait to be the focus of the offering. This means using small hooks (many fishermen use hooks that are much too large) and light line (many anglers also use fishing line that’s entirely too heavy). A great way to accomplish this task is by using gang hooks, which are attached to your line by a barrel swivel. This way the line that’s spooled on your reel can be a different weight than the line that your bait is rigged on. The point is that the bait needs to be the focus of your offering when fishing with bait of any kind.
The bottom line is that these 3 fishing bait tips will make anyone a more effective bait fisherman. Add one or all of these tips to your fishing repertoire sooner, rather than later. Your catch rates will increase dramatically with these simple tips.
